To salute the International Day of Education and in pursuit of dream, Maple Leaf Educational Systems held the 2nd Maple Leaf English Speech Contest themed with “Be the change you wish to see in the world - Chinese Dream, Mapleleafers’ Dream”. Any student from Maple Leaf primary, middle and high schools was encouraged to participate, and they were divided into four groups - Grade K-3, Grade 4-6, middle school group, and high school group. From preliminary round on school campus basis to semi-final round within school districts, a total of 32 first-place winners from eight school districts entered the final of the 2nd Maple Leaf English Speech Contest.

Today, the much anticipated final was grandly held at the auditorium of Maple Leaf International School - Wuhan. Under the meticulous organization of ESL Center and other departments of Maple Leaf Educational School District - Hubei, it came to a successful closure. As soon as contestants and accompanying parents and teachers, as well as friends in media sector and from all walks of life entered Wuhan Campus, they felt the remarkable difference that it brought to them. On both sides of the tree-lined road leading to the auditorium stood a plenty of easels introducing diversified clubs on Wuhan campus and a variety of excellent student works. All of them who walked through were marveled at the colorful life of students and their outstanding capacities.

Mr. Peter Froese, Superintendent of B.C. Program, Mr. Bao Fang, Mr. Ren Hongge, and Ms. Zhai Xia, Director of ESL Teaching and Teachers Recruitment Office, as well as Ms. Zhao Wentong, Supervisor of Academic Support Center presented the event as judges of the contest. And it also gathered a lot of honorable audience to watch this fantastic show. They are headmasters and principals from Xi’an Campus, Zhenjiang Campus, Jingzhou Campus, Xiangyang Campus and other campuses, as well as ESL directors from different campuses, some students and parents. It was a spectacular gathering where all of them were filled with great enthusiasm.

At the beginning of the event, Headmaster Mr. Zhu of Maple Leaf Educational School District - Hubei delivered the opening speech, in which he expressed the importance of public speaking ability and mentioned “95% of all Maple Leaf students participated the speech contest this year,” which showed the popularity of the contest. And at last he wished the event today a big success. After that, Chief Judge Mr. Ren Hongge explained the judging rubrics solemnly.

In the morning, two groups contested among Grade K-3 and Grade 4-6 kids, and the form of the former was prepared speech and talent show, and the form of the latter was prepared speech and Q&A. In both groups, these kids presented their perfect states and gave full play to their potentials. The lovely Grade K-3 kids took the challenge without any bit of shyness, and the shows they staged deeply impressed the audience. The spirited Grade 4-6 kids acquitted themselves brilliantly in delivering speech and answering judges’ questions, as self-confident expressions naturally emerged on their childish faces.

In the afternoon, middle school and high school groups had their parts, which were prepared speech and Q&A for middle school group, and impromptu speech and Q&A for high school group. The students from middle school group performed very well in expressing their thoughts logically and fluently just as experienced orators. And the students from high school group had only a short time of 30 minutes to prepare, to think and organize their ideas after they got their topics, but they all demonstrated high proficiency of English, strong ability of logical thinking, large accumulation of knowledge, and confident posture on stage. All of these contestants today fully displayed the spirit that Chinese youth are supposed to have, and their wonderful performances won recognition and rounds of warm applause from the excited audience. It is a sure thing that Maple Leaf English education will achieve further superiority.

What’s more, Wuhan Campus prepared four types of fabulous shows during the event today, like dancing, mash-up, poetry recitation and English singing and dancing, all revealing students’ vibrancy and attitude of striving for excellence。

Mr。 Peter Froese gave a summary and commented on today’s contest。 He felt greatly proud of the finalists and spoke highly of their performance by saying that “I’ve assessed speeches in British Columbia, Canada and here in China, and I have to tell you that our students here in China, in Maple Leaf, are as confident as speech abilities people see in countries in the West。”

Through a whole day of fierce contest, four contestants stood out and won the first place in the groups they belong to. They are Alice from Wuhan campus, Minnie from Wuhan campus, Kevin from Chongqing campus, and Brian from Dalian campus respectively. It was exactly their hard work and constant effort that contributed to their great achievements today. Leaders from Maple Leaf Educational Systems and Headmaster Mr. Zhu presented the awards and trophies to the first, second, and third prize winners, as well as honorable mention award winners. Special thanks are hereby given to China Merchants Bank and NetEase Youdao for sponsoring the valuable trophies.

And “Outstanding District” award was given to Maple Leaf Educational School District - Hubei upon unanimous agreement of the judging committee after assessing organization and publicity work of all districts for the contest.

President Xi Jinping once said “The Chinese Dream is a dream about history, the present, and the future。 It is a dream of our generation, but even more so, a dream of the younger generations。 The Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation will be realized ultimately through the endeavors of young people, generation by generation。” The International Day of Education and the 2nd Maple Leaf English Speech Contest once again ignited students’ enthusiasm of studying English and enhanced their patriotism。 Let’s look forward to greater achievements in the contest next year!
